Reverse Osmosis Filters: Essential To Keeping An Aquarium

Taking care of an aquarium is serious business. After all, aquarium owners take a contained ecosystem out of its natural place and bring it to their living room or bedroom. In other words, the survival of an ecosystem falls in the hands of an aquarium hobbyist.

Most probably, the necessary discipline and control is what draws people to maintain aquariums. So many variables have to be monitored just to ensure that the fishes survive.

The most important variable has to be quality of the water.

Water is to fish, as what air is to people. Without water, the fish won't have a place to swim, mate, or feed. In other words, the water is the home of the fish.

Water quality is important precisely because of this. If the aquarium water is dirty, the fish would literally be swimming in garbage. If the water had high concentrations of harmful substance, then the fish would be swimming in poison.

Understanding this, many aquarium hobbyists install reverse osmosis purifier units into their aquariums. These units make sure that the water in the aquarium is just right for the fish to survive. These units either filter out harmful substances or maintain the purity of the water.

Reverse osmosis or RO is the process of applying pressure onto a mixture to separate it into its solvent and solute components. The separation is achieved mainly by forcing the entire mixture through a semipermeable membrane that lets the solvent (i.e. water) pass through while hindering the solute.

RO filters are particularly useful in keeping algae growth at bay. If substances such as phosphates and silicates are present in the water, algae is sure to emerge. These organisms are not harmful to fish, but when found in contained environments like an aquarium, they can affect the equilibrium with disastrous results.

RO filters are also very important in maintaining saline levels in saltwater tanks. Often, the filters themselves are equipped with sensors that measure the salt levels in the aquarium. Much like how a thermostat maintains temperature, some RO filters can release salt when saline concentrations begin to fall below required levels.

Because water quality is important to the survival of fish, RO filters can be considered very essential to maintaining a healthy aquarium.
